Sunshine Topper

Ready to brighten up your day? These sunshine topper will do the trick. Follow these steps to make your own cake topper today.

What you'll need:

  • Buddy Valastro Foods Fondant
  • Paper straw (striped or other)
  • Toothpicks
  • 3.25" round cutter
  • 5/8" round cutter
  • 4" leaf cutter
  • Paintbrush
  • Water

Step 1

Roll out the yellow fondant. Use the 3.25" cutter to cut a circle as the starting point for the sun.

Step 2

Use your finger to round the edges of the circle.

Step 3

Use the 4" leaf cutter to cut triangle-like shapes as shown. Cut 8.

Step 4

Use the 4" leaf cutter to cut triangle-like shapes that are slightly smaller than the shaped you cut in Step 3.  

Step 5

Dip your paintbrush in water and brush water onto one of the larger triangle-shapes. Place a smaller shape on top of the larger one and gently press. Wait for the water to dry and test to see that the two shapes are stuck together. Repeat for all other triangle-shapes.

Step 6

Use paintbrush and water to lightly moisten the corners of each triangle shape and form all 8 into a circle shape as shown in image.

Step 7

Place straw into center of the circle from Step 1 & 2

Step 8

Ensure that the circle for the rays is all attached. Use paintbrush and water to lightly moisten the bottom edges of the triangle pieces. Place your original cicle onto the rays and let dry.

Step 9

Roll out the black fondant. Use the 5/8" round cutter to cut out three small cressent shapes as shown in image.

Step 10

Use your paintbrush and water to attach the three black cressents to the sun in the form of a smile face as shown in the image.

Step 11

Roll white fondant into several small circle shapes and flatten slightly. Use your paintbrush and water to attached 3-5 circle shapes together to form a cloud shape. Make 2-3 clouds.

Push toothpicks into bottom of each cloud.

Step 12

Use straw and toothpicks to place sunshine and clouds into cake to display.
